E-way bill: the five failures that stop trucks at the gate

Compliance Team · 29 Apr 2026 · 5 min read

An e-way bill failure at dispatch is not a portal problem. It is a master data problem that surfaced at the worst possible moment.

The five recurring causes are an invalid or cancelled GSTIN on the consignee master, a place-of-supply mismatch against the billing state, an HSN code that does not exist at the required digit length, a vehicle number that fails VAHAN format validation, and a distance declaration that exceeds the permitted validity for the vehicle type.

Each is checkable before the truck is loaded. Validating masters at creation, rather than at dispatch, removes almost all of these.
